Recovery after foot and ankle surgery is never easy, but if you follow the right tips, you can make things easier on yourself than they otherwise would be. We’re here to make your recovery as easy on you as it can be. And to help, here is our top tip for foot surgery recovery.
Rest, Rest and Rest!
Yep, the best thing you can do after foot and ankle surgery is rest!If there is one tip that will take you the farthest in your foot or ankle surgery recovery, it is this. You must rest. Pushing yourself too soon or too hard spells disaster. It can slow your healing, reinjure your foot or ankle and even result in greater pain than what the surgery was meant to correct. When we tell you how many weeks to stay off your foot and rest, we really do mean it!
Of Course, There Is More to Healing Than Just Rest
So you do need more tips to get by than just our top one. Here are some others we bet you’ll find helpful during your recovery.
- Keep the foot that was operated on elevated. Fluid buildup is one of the most common complications of these surgeries and can be quite painful.
- Use ice packs on the area for 20 minutes at a time. Never leave the ice in place for longer than that as it can risk frostbite. Give yourself at least a 20 minute break before icing again.
- Keep the surgical area clean. Dirty casts and boots are breeding grounds for really dangerous bacteria.
